Being a young ref is one of the best things I did, it first started when I developed a love for the sport rugby, wasn’t very good and didn’t have much knowledge of the game. But despite this, I decided to keep going with the help of my coaches and friends, and now I would consider myself quite good at rugby. My mum decided to book me into a refereeing course, at first I was very hesitant as I didn’t think I would be good at it; however, after my course loved it and I wanted to put in the knowledge I had learnt and get out onto that pitch!!
In my first game, I was very nervous, but after I had finished, I was very proud of myself, and I was glad I had started refereeing. This is when I developed a love for not just the sport but also the support I could give to other young players like myself.

If I hadn’t started reffing, I don’t think I would have the confidence I do now. It has helped me make new friends and develop my social skills. I recommend starting reffing if you love the sport, as personally, it brings great opportunities.
If I could give someone any advice, it would be to keep trying, never to give up, as there are so many chances along the way.
