More Than Just a Game: How Warrington Select Supports Local Worthy Causes

Warrington Select is a town representative team that plays matches purely to raise money for charitable causes and community projects. The team is made up of players who volunteer themselves from the amateur clubs from within the town and it’s surrounding areas. At the time of writing, we have had 72 players pull our shirt on with 22 community clubs represented.

We decided from the outset that the Super League, or professional rugby more generally, was beyond our scope. However…..the community game (in all its guises) needed some enthusiasm, some promotion and a platform to showcase the amazing things that are happening in our game.

We are completely non-profit. Every penny we raise either goes directly to our charities or funds the overheads to put on our annual family fun day “Rocco’s & Rugby Festival”. This event has grown from a game and a bouncy castle with a few hundred in attendance to this year’s event which saw 3 games of rugby, a stage with DJ sets and live music, a fun fair, makers market, outdoor bar and over 1,500 people in attendance. This fun day is our biggest fund raiser and since our first event in 2023, it has managed to raise over £20,000 for:

  • Rocco’s Hospice
  • Halton Haven Hospice
  • Life for a Kid
  • Cancer Research UK

The players themselves pay subs to train and play as well as gain sponsorship from local businesses. All of which helps bring different parts of the community together for these great causes.

Our mission is to not only raise money for worthy causes but to also bring people together to support one another and build connections that will not only make a difference to causes that need help but to also better benefit the town as a whole. We want to try to promote old school values of community, empathy, integrity and respect. Warrington is an amazing town full of amazing people doing amazing things and we want to create a platform that puts these things in the spotlight to show that the world and the town isn’t all doom and gloom; it’s actually extremely positive and if you seek the right people and groups out you will realise that the positives outweigh the negatives by a vast amount.

Warrington select is currently in its 2025/26 fundraising year and we have already been involved in an event that has raised over £10,000 for Wigan and Leigh Hospice. We are proud to not only put on our own events and matches but get involved with other groups who are also doing great things in their community. Rocco’s & Rugby Festival 2026 is nearly here.  We will once again be playing the Rugby League All Stars will be looking to back up our win over them this year. As well as the game, we have some very big plans for the day as a whole, follow us on our social media channels to stay up to date with event announcements. We hope to see you all there as we aim to hit an ambitious target of £15,000!
